ARTICLE 4: "THE CHURCH AT EPHESUS: RETURNING TO FIRST LOVE"
First in a seven-part series exploring the churches of Revelation
When Christ addressed the church at Ephesus in Revelation 2:1-7, He began with commendation: "I know your works, your labor, your patience, and that you cannot bear those who are evil." The Ephesian believers were hardworking, doctrinally sound, and persevering.
Yet something crucial was missing: "Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love."
This powerful message speaks directly to many congregations today. We can maintain correct doctrine, serve tirelessly, and resist false teaching—yet gradually drift from the passionate love for Christ that first ignited our faith.
The remedy Christ prescribes is threefold:
Remember from where you have fallen
Repent of your current condition
Return to doing the first works
At 21st Century Church of Christ, we regularly examine our hearts to ensure our service flows from deep love rather than mere duty. Our worship, our ministry, and our fellowship must all be expressions of our first love for Messiah.
As we hear Christ's words to Ephesus, let us ask ourselves: Has our love for Yeshua remained our primary motivation? Or have we, like Ephesus, allowed other concerns—even good ones—to displace that first love?
Join us this Sabbath as Pastor John continues our "Seven Candlesticks" sermon series with an in-depth look at the church at Ephesus.
